Diversity in practice
NordConnect recognises cross-cultural communication as a crucial part of fostering inclusivity. So, the element of cross cultural communication is incorporated into the entrepreneurship bootcamp to raise awareness about cultural differences encountered in new environments and considerations for branding and networking. The project also emphasizes cross-cultural communication in schools, addressing interactions with individuals of different races, locations, and genders.
Youth at action
NordConnect is on a mission to empower immigrants by providing a platform for them to practice their skills. We have kicked off a fantastic initiative where immigrants have the opportunity to directly contribute to a project that instills a sense of responsibility, belonging and acceptance.
Every Thursday, a group of 11 students, aged 16-25+, from TUVA, Saimaan Ammattiopisto Sampo, and LAB University of Applied Sciences come together in a co-working space to engage in diverse tasks, from website development and video editing to event management and marketing video production for the project.
Our team, composed of youth from Ukraine, Russia, Congo, Bangladesh, and Argentina, spans six nationalities and embraces diversity. By working together and interacting with other nationalities at project-organized events, they have gained valuable skills in multicultural communication. This hands-on involvement not only enhances their practical knowledge but also provides real-life work experience, fostering a strong sense of belonging.
This initiative has also been highlighted by TE-Live as a model for best practices in empowering immigrants, showcasing how the project effectively bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world application.
Youth as Diversity Leaders
NordConnect has created a unique platform for students to step into leadership roles within diversity and inclusion offering them the opportunity to organize and oversee a range of activities both within and beyond Lappeenranta. This hands-on experience allows students to take charge of events that include fun games, language learning sessions, and cultural quizzes for refugees and international students in Luumäki and Lappeenranta.
By being at the helm of these events, students are not only honing their organizational and management skills but also setting benchmarks for community involvement with their dedication and vision for change. The platform has enabled them to lead a series of impactful events, from language cafes, CV workshop, museum tours and local festival celebrations to exploring new hobbies and preparing for work placements.
This initiative not only empowers students by giving them real-world experience but also enhances their ability to contribute positively to their communities. Their leadership and commitment to fostering inclusivity and cultural understanding are truly inspiring, underscoring the project’s success in providing valuable growth opportunities for emerging leaders.
